Laboratory

Our laboratory is equipped with lasers, high-speed cameras, and several flumes and turbulence generators. We reconstruct the trajectories of particles or freely-swimming planktonic organisms by means of three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry, using a multi-camera system or cameras equipped with image splitters. Our multi-camera system is based on four synchronized, high-speed Eosens cameras by Mikrotron recording at a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels at up to 500 frames per second, and on a high-capacity streaming and storage system (DVR Express Core 2 by IO Industries).

Turbulence generator
This flume is used to study turbulent entrainment in gravity currents, and turbulent mixing and dispersion of particles across turbulent/non-turbulent interfaces.
Photron SA5
Photron SA5 camera mounted in front of an image splitter. The image splitter allows stereoscopic imaging using one single camera only.
Measurement setup
Particle tracking velocimetry measurements using fluorescent flow tracers and a three-camera system. The flow is forced by two arrays of counter-rotating disks. Illumination is provided by a pulsed laser (Darwin Duo 100-M).
